The term DERMATITIS and ECZEMA are often used synonymously. Dermatitis can be divided into exogenous causes (allergic contact and primary irritant) and endogenous, which implies all forms of dermatitis not directly related to external causes. Eczema is a non-infectious inflammation of the skin. The dermatitis/eczema group of skin diseases includes the following:
• contact dermatitis – painful, weeping skin, an acute or chronic inflammation resulting from direct contact with chemicals or other irritants. A contributing factor condition may be when the stomach fails to produce enough hydrochloric acid for proper digestion.
• atopic dermatitis or eczema – a persistent skin condition associated with allergy, often associated with hereditary background, tendency to develop one or more of a group of conditions (allergic rhinitis, asthma, eczema, skin sensitivities most common on the face, neck, wrist, hands and eyelids, behind the ears, in the creases of the groin, knees and elbows.)
Both atopic and contact dermatitis cause changes in how the repair mechanism of the skin works. The repair process in the skin is permanently activated, but never completed. People with eczema regenerate skin faster than people without eczema, but the skin never acquires normal immune function.
TO MAKE THINGS EVEN MORE CONFUSING: Eczema has two distinct phases. It starts off with a hot, inflamed and itchy stage. During this stage, the treatment has to be cooling and soothing. No heavy creams should be applied, as this would warm up the skin even more and make the irritation even worse.
