Fever blisters are caused by the contagious herpes simplex virus. Most people infected with the type 1 herpes simplex virus became infected before age 10. The virus usually invades the moist membrane cells of the lips, throat or mouth and stays dormant in the body until the immune system is compromised and weak. Recurring blisters usually erupt at the outside edge of the lip or the edge of the nostril, but can also occur on the chin, cheeks, or inside the mouth.

Factors that weaken the body’s immune system and trigger an outbreak include: emotional stress, fever, illness, injury and exposure to sunlight.

SYMPTOMS – A cold sore usually passes through several stages:

• Tingling and itching – Many people feel itching, burning or tingling around the lips for a day or so before a small, hard, painful spot appears and blisters form.
• Blisters – Small fluid-filled blisters often form along the border of the lips. Sometimes they appear around the nose or cheeks or inside the mouth.
• Oozing and crusting – The small blisters may merge and then burst. This can leave shallow open sores that ooze and crust over.

Application:

• apply 1 drop undiluted to the affected area 3 times a day for the first 24 to 36 hrs of outbreak until the blister dries up

• after that apply lip moisturizer after each application to moisturize the affected area and keep it from drying and cracking
